Introduction
Synopsys is a world leader in electronic design automation (EDA), supplying the global electronics market with the software, intellectual property (IP) and services used in semiconductor design, verification and manufacturing. Synopsys’ comprehensive, integrated portfolio of implementation, verification, IP, manufacturing and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) solutions helps address the key challenges designers and manufacturers face today.

Compute power, multimedia, graphics, video and communications features continue to converge in consumer products, applying constant pressure on engineers to create designs that are especially sensitive to power consumption, size and cost. Synopsys gives its customers a competitive edge in bringing the best products to market quickly while reducing costs and schedule risk. From high-level synthesis to silicon, Synopsys provides solutions to the most difficult challenges that confront engineers who are pushing electronic design to the limit, including power management, accelerated time to yield, time to results (TTR), software-to-silicon verification and predictable design closure to reduce the cost of design. Synopsys technology can be found in virtually every chip in the world.

History
Since its inception more than 23 years ago, Synopsys has grown from a small one-product start-up to a diverse company that is the technology leader in IC design tools, offering a complete solution from concept to silicon. The company was founded in 1986 by Dr. Aart J. de Geus and a team of engineers from General Electric's Microelectronics Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. First established as "Optimal Solutions," Synopsys was chartered to develop and market the synthesis technology developed by the team at General Electric. Synopsys proceeded to pioneer the commercial application of logic synthesis that has since been adopted by every major electronics company in the world.

Recent Mergers and Acquisitions
Throughout its history, Synopsys has accelerated its technology strategy by adding to its internally developed products with technology gained from mergers and acquisitions.

Key acquisitions in 2008 and 2009 include the following:

On May 8, 2009, Synopsys acquired the Analog Business Group of MIPS Technologies, Inc. The acquisition expands Synopsys' DesignWare® intellectual property (IP) portfolio with a new family of analog IP such as Analog-to-Digital Converters, Digital-to-Analog Converters, Audio Codecs and Power Management. It also adds HDMI TX and RX protocols to Synopsys' existing interface IP solution. Synopsys expects the acquisition to benefit designers in a number of ways, including: providing access to an even broader portfolio of high-quality interface and analog IP that supports the latest connectivity standards, process technologies and foundries - all from a single, trusted vendor; and continuing to maintain the quality standards and excellent technical support which customers are accustomed to receiving from Synopsys.

On December 18, 2008, Synopsys acquired the CHIPit business unit of ProDesign, a leading provider of high-speed ASIC and System-on-Chip (SoC) verification systems. CHIPit is a line of automated ASIC prototyping solutions that provides hardware-assisted verification throughout the SoC and ASIC project life cycles. The integration of CHIPit's strong team, technology and products into Synopsys' Synplicity Business Group expands Synopsys' presence in the fast-growing rapid prototyping segment and accelerate its ability to address every phase in the verification cycle.

On May 16, 2008, Synopsys acquired Synplicity®, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative field programmable gate array (FPGA) and IC design and verification solutions that serve a wide range of communications, military/aerospace, semiconductor, consumer, computer, and other electronic applications markets. The acquisition expands Synopsys' technology portfolio, channel reach and total addressable market by adding complementary products and expertise for FPGA solutions and rapid ASIC prototyping.
